11. Question: Does the Bible teach that speaking in other tongues is the only true evidence that a Believer has been filled with Holy Spirit?
Answer: No! There is absolutely no definitive statement in the Bible which states that this teaching is indeed a fact; However, there is overwhelming proof that speaking in tongues is indeed an indicating factor that a Believer has been filled with the Holy Spirit. For when reading the account of the Gentiles who the Apostle Peter was sent to convert, we find that those with Peter knew that the Gentiles had received the gift of the Holy Ghost because they heard them speak with tongues.
“And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?” Acts 10:45-47
Therefore we understand that while speaking in tongues is indeed “an” indicating factor that a Believer has received the gift of the Holy Spirit, it is certainly not “the” all conclusive evidence which every Believer must have to prove that they have received the gift of the Holy Spirit. As it is written:
“Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will....Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?.” 1st Corinthians 12:4-11,...27-30
