I.

If Only I?

"And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly." Matthew 6:5-6

If only I could make a sound

With the stroke of this my pen

And break the silence that abounds

Without and moves within

If only I could scream in ink

And shatter the dark of night

To grasp the spilling flooding rays

Of brightest shining light

If only I could see my soul

For what it really is

Only then could I comprehend

The mercy God freely gives

If only I could catch a glimpse

Of the Lamb of God on high

I would understand the Holiness of God

And it would change my life

If only I used the faith

Of which God freely gives

A measure of a mustard seed

Yes then my soul would live

And If only I would pray to Christ

And plead His blood shed grace

It is only then that I shall behold

God's Glory in His shining face.

"Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord....For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us." 2nd Corinthians 3:17-18,...4:6-7

II.

Grace Abounds

"Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound. That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 5:19-21

When the battle looks lost and without a hope

That thy loved ones shall be saved

Don't forget God's saving grace

And the costly price He paid

For Death and Hell will reach out for them

Until the very end

So it is up to us to pray them through

From their besetting sins

Therefore remember that the effectual fervent prayer

Of the righteous availeth much

For the chains of sin break asunder

With the Master's touch

Thus what of sin and the power thereof

Compared to the power of Jesus Christ

Remember He raised the dead and rose again

For He is the Resurrection and the Life

Therefore do not fret or fear in vain

When Satan comes to steal

For all it takes is the presence of Jesus Christ

The way-ward’s heart to feel

For the Light of Life hath shined out of darkness

Conquering Death in victory

Thus the prayer of faith shall save the sick

And set the sinner free

So no matter how far they seem to be fallen

Lost or backslidden in sin

Remember God's promises shall never fail

Yet we must stand in the gap for them

Because where sin abounded grace did much more abound

For sin hath reigned unto death

Thus even so might grace reign unto eternal life

By Jesus Christ through righteousness.

"Is any among you afflicted? let him pray....Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit. Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins." James 5:13-20

A

Bloody Coat

of

Many Colors

"And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood; And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son's coat or no. And he knew it, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces. And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days. And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him." Genesis 37:31-35

"And they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said unto them: and when he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived: And Israel said, It is enough; Joseph my son is yet alive: I will go and see him before I die." Genesis 45:27-28

A coat of many colors

A gift of a father's love

Given unto the seed of promise

A dreamer of things above

A coat of many colors

Ripped, tattered and torn

Drenched in the blood of hateful deceit

No more to be then worn

A bloody coat dropped at our feet

Our dream appears to die

As all that was promised disappears

Thus in our agony we groan and cry

The earth as concrete and the sky as brass

As we pray in mourning and grief

Yet the earth grows harder as the skies get darker

And our own hearts they sometimes bleed

True intercession to the God of life

And resurrection power

When the enemy strikes a fatal blow

Of his most dark deceptive power

Yet do not fret and fear thou not

When all seems so dark in death

For thy God above has all might and power

In the Word of his life giving breath

Shall these bones live again

The Prophets words doth ring

O Breath of God blow this night

Please resurrection my dream

Therefore, whose report shall you believe?

Your dream has never died

For the season's sufferings shall one day pass

And your dream shall live and rise

Thus look thou not to the hardend earth

Or to a sky of brass to seek thy help

For like Jacob of old, your spirit shall be revived

when the answer comes for which you have knelt

For though all others doubt and all else fails

You must believe in faith that you're not alone

Because God's Word of promise shall prove to be true

For God still reigns from on His Throne.

"Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." Romans 8:18-30

The

Vortex of Sin

"Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.) Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;" Hebrews 3:7-12

Into the vortex

First drawn then you're pulled

No longer in control

Because you have played the fool

Deeper and farther

It's no illusion of the mind

Darker and harder

Becomes a heart so truly blind

Questioning the reasons

Your soul is under arrest

Answering the meaning

You are failing at the test

The drift began slowly

Accelerating so fast

The currents grow stronger

As your future becomes your past

Standing in the sway

You do not comprehend

With each passing day

You cling tighter to your sin

Your once fruitful field

Is now a cracked dry desert land

Your soul is parched and cries

When will you understand?

Insidious is the effect

Of the world's hold on you

The cares of life have snared your soul

You must admit it's true

Thus resist the Devil and he shall flee

Your carnal  lust deny

Be afflicted, mourn and weep,

And lay hold of God on high.

©1989 Raymond Bolton Pena

"But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up." James 4:6-10

The

Valley of Oppression

"The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee." Psalms 9:9-10

In the valley of oppression

Through trials deep and wide

Denying the dark depression

Which seeks an entrance down inside

Resisting Satan's lying seeds

With questions racing through the mind

Seeking a place to conjure unholy deeds

To form a bitter root for a soul to blind

The fist of wickedness that turns

Within your chest you feel

Hardening of a heart that yearns

Your faith it seeks to kill

Cries within the soul that scream

You’re numb unto it all

Such unreality which seems

To drive you toward a fall

The floods of death - The waves that roar

Emotions are high pitched - As they soar

Demons scream so vicious and mean

Echoing throughout your head

Exposing fears through heartless jeers

With threats of death and dread

Thus you find yourself in tears

As on your knees you pray

For in a valley of such oppression

Deliverance seems delayed

Yet the victory belongs unto Jesus Christ

For what is the shadow of death - To the light of life?

So when the devil is laughing in your face

Unto despair and depression give no place

You must stand - Having done all

Stand therefore - And you shall not fall

For God's love for you shall not fail

Just pray through - And let faith set sail.

"Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's. The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed." Psalms 103:1-6

Deep Hope

in

Deep Depression

"As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance. O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar." Psalms 42:1-6

Deep calleth unto deep

Drawing deeper still

Even though I have mourned

And at times forsaken I feel

Through Thy Spirit's groanings

Though unuttered heard

Thy Spirit helpeth my infirmities

Without an uttered word

And I know that my heart

Could not even inquire

Lest it was first Thee

Who quickened my desire

Panting within

My heart longs for Thee

My soul is cast down

deep calleth back unto Deep

Why art thou cast down, O my soul?

And why art thou disquieted within?

Hope thou in God who is the health of thy countenance

for I shall yet praise Him

For His loving kindness in the daytime

And for His song in the night

For He is my Rock and my Strength

My God and my Life.

© 1993 Raymond Bolton Pena

Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me. Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life. I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God? Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God." Psalms 42:7-11

Panic Attack!

"Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul. I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me. I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God." Psalms 69:1-3

"But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O LORD, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation. Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters. Let not the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me. Hear me, O LORD; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies. And hide not thy face from thy servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily." Psalms 69:13-17

"I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving. This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs. The humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God. For the LORD heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners. Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth therein. For God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah: that they may dwell there, and have it in possession. The seed also of his servants shall inherit it: and they that love his name shall dwell therein." Psalms 69:30-36

It comes on like a cloud

Falling from the sky

Descending like death from above

Yet you know not the reason why

It is a spirit of deep confusion

Which seems to completely overwhelm

It brings the spirits of fret and fear

And it feels like you're in hell

"Acute Anxiety" is putting it lightly

As you feel the need to cry

And in this hellish state of panic

You feel just like you're going to die

Then your heart starts beating faster

And you feel like you can't breathe

As the world closes in

You find yourself in desperate need

Of how to stop this madness

As your mind it reels in fear

Your emotions are tore and twisted

Your under an attack it is so clear

Some people reach for pills

To calm their nerves and thus escape

For when under this attack

You feel your nerves are going to break

As you tremble in your soul

And feel that you can no longer cope

The dark despair grows even stronger

Until you feel like there is no hope

Thus "attack" is a fitting word

To describe the assault you under go

When unseen forces assail you life

And molest you weary soul

Yet the answer is to have faith

In God's Word as you pray

For Satan the Devil is a liar

You need not panic nor be dismayed

For Jesus holds the keys

Of Death and Hell be not afraid

When the enemy comes in like a flood

Call upon Jesus as you pray

Then stand upon His promises

To quench all the fiery darts of this foe

For no weapon formed against you

Shall be able to prosper against your soul

© 2008 Raymond Bolton Pena

"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that strive with thee shall perish. Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, even them that contended with thee: they that war against thee shall be as nothing, and as a thing of nought. For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee." Isaiah 41:10-13

"O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colours, and lay thy foundations with sapphires. And I will make thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones. And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children. In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee. Behold, they shall surely gather together, but not by me: whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake. Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy. No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD." Isaiah 54:11-17
